How HDPE Plastic Is Used

HDPE, known as high-density Polyethylene, is a petroleum-based thermoplastic polymer that is one of the most flexible plastic materials on the market. It's used to produce many items including food and beverage containers, bottles for cleaning products, cutting boards, pipes, and some sections in shoes. HDPE is used in more complex items including wood-plastic composites, 3-D printing filaments, and in components used in skeletal and facial reconstruction surgery.

The production of HDPE started in the 1930s in the UK. It quickly gained widespread popularity and when production in the US picked up in the 1950s. Today, this is one of the most popular plastics on the market. It's lightweight, strong, and will last a very long time.

The leading reasons why it's so popular

Offers an extraordinary tensile strength
Easy to manufacture
A superior strength-to-density ratio
A high-impact resistance
Offers a high melting point
Is available in many textures and sizes
Offers good chemical resistance

HDPE Plastic Uses

One of HDPE plastic's most appealing features is its durability and weather resistance. It's exceptionally resistant to rotting, mildew, insects, and mold. You can mold it into any shape you need for your product.  HDPE is perfect for any number of products that will remain outside for a long period of time, including:

Outside patio furniture
Playground equipment
Storage containers
Trash and recycling bins
Bins for compost
Plastic lumber
Plastic parts for vehicles including fuel reservoirs

For indoor uses, it's a popular choice for items in the kitchen. This material is great for food and beverage containers, cutting boards, counters, tables, and small appliances.Industrial-grade HDPE plastic is approved by the FDA, NSF, and USDA. It's specifically made for low maintenance, it's safe, and will last a long time. HDPE plastic boards can have a textured surface to offer a good grip when handling food.

HDPE Plastic Benefits

This material is perfect for products found in just about every manufacturing niche worldwide. We even have options in white plastic rolls, here are some of the leading benefits of using HDPE plastic:

High Strength-to-Density Ratio

Even though the density is barely higher than low-density polyethylene (LDPE), its linear structure shows much less branching. This means it shows stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength than LDPE. This is precisely why a 60-gram HDPE container can safely carry approximately 8 pounds of weight or over a gallon of liquid.

Flexibility

Flexibility is one of the leading benefits of HDPE Exterior Waterproofing Membrane due to its ability to be molded easily once the optimum temperature is met. Due to a high melting point,  the material can be easily molded for many different applications from milk jugs and food storage containers as well as for corrosion-resistant piping and playground equipment.

Easy To Recycle

Not only is recycling an important part of protecting the environment, but it's also an excellent avenue for promoting certain products.  Businesses and individuals alike can seriously reduce plastic production costs by sending used or no longer needed items to the recycling plant instead of the landfill. Most HDPE-produced items can go directly into any neighborhood's weekly recycling pickup stops.

Protected Against External Factors In The Environment

While strength is a top priority when considering the benefits of this plastic, so is its resistance to external factors including mold, mildew, and rotting. Because this plastic is long-lasting and weather-resistant, it can withstand contact with strong mineral acids and bases that take place naturally in soil.  HDPE plastic is a great material for underground piping used to deliver water. HDPE can be sterilized by boiling and is an excellent choice for food and beverage containers. Lastly, HDPE plastic is immune to most common chemicals, water, solvents, acids, detergents, and cleaning fluids.

HDPE Containers Are Built To Last

HDPE is also very popular because it's replacing heavier materials allowing companies and individuals to reach sustainable and affordable manufacturing goals.  This highly immune material offers rigid strength and corrosion resistance.  HDPE is the perfect combination of strength, environmentally friendly, and low in cost.
