Landscape Fabric Overview

The purpose of Landscape Fabric, beyond all else, is to prevent weed growth and allow your garden beds to look absolutely fabulous.  Landscape fabric will cut back on the moisture content and will give your space stability. Some of the most popular kinds of landscape fabric include woven, non-woven, spun, and perforated.

What Is Landscape Fabric's Objective?

Originally, landscape fabric was designed to prevent physical barriers between the sun and soil. It usually connects over the woven and non-woven material.  These fabrics are commonly known as weed fabric or barrier and landscape fabric. It prevents weed seeds from germinating without getting any sun. Also, it will keep down the needed requirements for herbicidal weed control.

What Are The Benefits & Faults Using Landscape Fabric

Like any product, landscape fabric comes with its pros and cons, so let's take a closer look:

The Benefits -

Landscape fabric comes with a large range of benefits including:

It offers sun-blocking capabilities to allow the soil to preserve moisture and help reduce evaporation.

The fabric is known for added stability outside of acting as a preventative step for stopping erosion in areas that are known to wash away soil from heavy rains.

This fabric plays a major role in hardscaping by stopping inorganic mulch like pea gravel and rocks from the soil.

Weak Points -

If you are planning on using landscape fabric, you should know about the weaker points as well:

Landscape fabric is not the perfect solution for reducing weeds by 100%,  It can reduce the growth of weed seeds but the roots can still get over the mulch allowing for germination in your lawn.

Organic wood chips will decompose over time and develop compost that will be good for weeds to take root.  All you need is a pre-emergent herbicide to stop the growth.

You can find landscaping fabric that will prevent nutrients developed with the help of decomposing any organic matter and prevent it from reaching below the soil.

If you find the faults dampening the benefits, you can use other alternatives including cardboard, burlap, newspaper, etc.  The benefits definitely outweigh the weaker points when using landscaping fabric.  You can choose the one that you believe will work best for you depending on your requirements.

The Types Of Landscape Fabric

There are different kinds of landscape fabric but when it comes to making a choice, you should always consider the highest quality material when installing geotextile fabric. Landscape fabric material quality really does matter. It might seem like a good idea to just go for the cheapest, plastic weed barrier but you will be better off picking the right fabric for the right project whether gardening or your lawn needs. Here is a closer look at some of the kinds of landscape fabrics available:

Woven

Woven landscaping fabric is the most popular and common fabric used in yards. It's made of linen fibers and polypropylene which are woven together to create a strong and semi-permeable material.

The small holes in the fabric move the nutrients and water to enter the soil while stopping the weeds from growing toward the sun.  This is an ideal weed control fabric for placing around shrubs and trees. The woven fabric comes in black, brown, green, or a natural burlap color.

Most homeowners use innate UV resistance or other options that treat UV stabilization so it can easily hold up in the environment. The cost for woven landscaping fabric can vary per the quality.

Non-Woven

These fabrics are made from polypropylene or polyester which is suitable for controlling weed growth in gravel, rock paths, or beds. The non-woven landscape fabrics are not permeable in comparison to the woven fabrics. These fabrics will affect the nutrients and water from getting underneath the soil.

They are well-known for their stability and for stopping stones from sinking into the soil.  There are several versions that are professional-grade that are normally used under stone pavers and in large-scale hardscaping.

Spunbound

Spunbound falls under the non-woven fabric and is made from bonded polyester fibers making it extremely durable. This heavy-duty fabric is tough enough to stand up to tears and rips.  Its thickness varies a great deal making it an excellent choice for many users.

The spun woven version comes in a thinner material that is spun-bonded making it permeable to air and water while still remaining very strong and durable. All the features of spun-woven fabric work really well with weed barrier over the beds and under rocks. It also secures the border to repel insects and invasive grasses.

The thicker fabric is very strong and durable making it suitable for other projects including drainage, irrigation, and retaining wall applications to prevent problems like seepage.

Perforated

These fabrics are lightweight and very inexpensive. The fabric has pre-cut holes of perforations where the plants are placed in. As you can see, the perforated landscape fabric will not suffocate plants and is very easy to replace. In general, they are used for gardens where plants are changed out frequently. You can find vegetable gardens lined with these fabrics.

While the perforated fabric is easy to manage and is lightweight, many pros recommend not using it in places with heavy foot traffic, or where there are large roots and/or animal activities.

They are well-known for their stability and for stopping stones from sinking into the soil.  There are several versions that are professional-grade that are normally used under stone pavers and in large-scale hardscaping.

When To Use Landscape Fabric

These fabrics are usually used for mulch areas close to shrubs, trees, and bushes. They are placed over soils and then a layer of mulch is added to the fabric. These fabrics are often used under rock or hardscaping. You can use this fabric under flower beds and ground cover to eliminate weeds for good weed control. As a caution, you should avoid using these fabrics below vegetable gardens or flower beds that have annuals because replanting can be difficult

Summary

Landscaping fabric has proven to be one of the best choices for protecting flower beds, vegetable gardens, and many other projects to keep weeds down and present a nice, clean look to your yard.
