Manufactured of HDPE, this ultra thick plastic weed barrier is designed for heavy duty landscape applications where serious weed prevention is required. Typical plastic weed barriers are often thin, easy punctured and fail under areas of major weed infestation. Designed for maximum puncture resistance, our plastic weed barrier is difficult to puncture in the 30 and 40 mil thicknesses and nearly impossible in the 60-100 mill thicknesses. Our plastic weed barrier is available in various thickness ranging from 30 mil to 100 mil. Typical weeds are contained with the 30 mil barrier however in more demanding situations a thicker plastic may be necessary.

Uses as a Plastic Landscape Barrier
In addition to the material's use as a weed barrier, this thick material can be used to contain tree roots and direct water flow in a landscape as well.

Note: Because this plastic is very thick it will not conform to the landscape as typical thin weed barrier plastics do. This can create an issue in areas where the dirt which or gravel which is placed over the fabric is disturbed on a regular basis. As the plastic is slippery this can lead to the ground covering becoming exposed. This plastic is ideally used in an area where minimal foot traffic or disruption is expected to the dirt or gravel which is placed to cover the plastic.

Does the material bend?

The HDPE material is flexible but cannot bend both laterally and vertically at the same time. To make a bend you will need to cut the material, turn and overlap.

Thickness comparison

The below is a thickness comparison of the material. HDPE plastic thickness is measured in "mils" which is "thousands of an inch".

Landscape Fabric Used as Weed Barrier

Plastic Weed Barrier vs Landscape Fabric

If you are in a battle to fight off weeds, using a plastic film roll create an unfriendly environment for weeds even though neither choice is foolproof. They are also used for many other purposes and each material has advantages as well as drawbacks. Whether choosing plastic or fabric will depend on what you are growing and the growing conditions.

Tip: We also have a tortoise fence barrier available in multiple roll sizes and lengths.

The Pros & Cons Of Weed Control

Landscape fabric and plastic will reduce the labor you put into removing weeds or the need to use toxic herbicides. Both plastic and fabric are inorganic options but do have their limitations and drawbacks. Also, the time and labor for installing and removing plastic sheeting and synthetic fabrics can be somewhat costly. Due to the size of the material, particularly for large gardens and landscaping, you will have to haul the used barriers to the dump.

If you will be using them in places where there will be plants, you have to cut holes or slits in the material in order to place your plants but holes can allow easy access to weeds. While plastic can smother existing weeds, it's important to remove weeds before placing the weed barrier.

Plastic Pros And Cons

It's a lot more difficult for weed roots to penetrate plastic than fabric. Using our outside waterproof plastic does have an advantage over fabric because it's impermeable.

Black sheeting is often used in landscaping and commercial vegetable production because it robs weeds of light and moisture. Also, plastic helps warm the soil for early planting and is used with drip irrigation for growing vegetables and small fruit plants by reducing evaporation.

Plastic will also help control insects and will promote early maturing and greater crop yields. The downside, for home use, plastic will reduce oxygen to the roots of trees and other landscape plants. If placed over a large area, it can block too much water from getting to the roots. Because plastic sheeting traps moisture in the soil, this can lead to tree roots rotting.

Landscape Fabric Pros And Cons

Even though landscape fabric is more expensive than plastic, it breathes which allows oxygen and moisture to circulate and water to pass through. This is without a doubt, the better choice in areas where you have trees and shrubs. Fabric is also a better choice over plastic for large landscape and garden areas if you do not have a drip irrigation system or a wide planting bed for alternating plastic with bare soil.

Landscape fabric, also known as geotextiles, will allow water from rain, a sprinkler system, or by hand to reach your plants' roots better than uninterrupted expanses of plastic sheeting.  Landscape fabrics are normally synthetic, made from either polyester or polypropylene.

Biodegradable landscape fabrics offer less waste and will reduce your labor for removing them and hauling them to the dump. Fabric is more eco-friendly than plastic. If you use organic mulch over biodegradable landscape fabric, the mulch will enrich the soil and won't block nutrients like plastic will.

How To Choose & Use A Barrier

If you live in a cooler climate, clear plastic will create warmer soil but will not stop weeds or pests as well as black plastic can. Landscape fabrics can restrain weeds because some fabrics have really small pores. When looking at fabric for weed control, hold the fabric up to a light. The fabrics with the smaller pores will only let in a small amount of light.

Keep in mind, a layer of mulch will improve the appearance of the landscape fabric or plastic sheeting and will slow the breakdown of the material by blocking sunlight. If you use an organic mulch, like bark, reduce the mulch covering to 1-inch deep to stop weeds from rooting.
