The geotextile landscape fabric is perfect for the most demanding weed control situations. This product is a unique blend of both woven fabric and nonwoven geotextile giving it great durability and water drainage. Designed by mixing both woven fabric for added strength, and nonwoven fabric for improved water flow and drainage the geotextile landscape is the ideal ground cover solution for weed control.

The dual-sided geotextile when faced woven side up offers markings to help landscapers with plant placement. The markings indicate the interval spacings for plants and help keep planting rows straight on larger projects. This fabric is popular for both residential planting beds and commercial applications alike.

Geotextile Fabric Installation

Geotextile Landscape Fabric Being Covered in Rocks

Using The Correct Geotextile Fabric Is Critical For Success

Avoiding errors when installing geotextile fabric will greatly improve your end project. Today, geotextile fabrics are in high demand and are used continually on active job sites. The technology is used to separate soil layers and it's hard to believe that 80 years ago, it did not even exist. By 2018, it turned into a $4.1 billion market around the world and continues to climb in popularity. It's believed the numbers will grow at an annual growth rate of 12.1 percent through the year 2025.

The amazing growth of the geotextile market has been energized by the success of the products. The use of this exceptional technology has grown into an acknowledged management practice that is required by government agencies, specified by design consultants, and routinely by contractors, cities, towns, and property owners.

Geotextile Fabrics

Selected and installed correctly, this fabric will reveal its true value. The first and foremost benefit of polypropylene landscape fabric is soil separation and weed prevention. By separating soil layers, the fabric will prevent soils from mixing.

Before the age of geotextile technology, construction sites struggled with mixing soil layers during construction. When constructing roads, processed gravel applied to the surface would usually sink into the softer subsoils. Most construction workers understood the phrase spread 50 lbs of stone over 50 lbs of mud and you get 100 lbs of mud. What would happen, the heavier stone material would easily sink and disappear into the softer subsurface material.

When geotextile fabrics are properly installed over the subsurface, the process of mixing and contamination are literally eliminated. In order to get the best results, choosing the appropriate, site-specific geotextile fabric is critical.

The two most popular fabrics are woven and nonwoven. Woven geotextiles are made of woven slit film polypropylene material  They combine high strength and low permeability and are extremely effective at bridging over wet or inferior soil layers. On the other hand, nonwoven geotextiles combine the strength of woven fabrics with high permeability making this fabric a better choice when the applications require both separation and filtration. Nonwoven fabrics are made of needle-punched polypropylene that will allow separation and filtration to take place at the same time.

Outside of woven and nonwoven fabrics, there are two other important geotextile product groups that are very important for ground stabilization. These products are woven monofilaments that combine the strength of woven with the permeability of nonwoven fabrics.  That said, spun-bound fabrics combine the toughness of woven geotextiles with the permeability of nonwoven products.

Woven Geotextiles

The most common uses for woven geotextile fabrics are underneath driveways, parking lots, residential streets, and highways. These fabrics have proven to be very effective in bridging over wet, weaker, or less desirable subgrade materials.  In these cases, the low permeability of the fabric offers long-term separation and stabilization at the same time. When the right fabric has been selected and installed, woven geotextiles will deliver exceptional performance, reduced long-term maintenance costs, and extended project life.

Nonwoven Geotextiles

Nonwoven geotextiles are the chosen product when soil separation and permeability are needed These products are used to wrap french drains or in combination with other sub-surface drainage solutions. Nonwoven fabrics are used beneath rock riprap revetment for controlling shoreline erosion when both separation and drainage are critical. As an example, if a new gravel driveway is being constructed over dry or well-drained subsoils, it would be preferable for moisture to pass through the fabric in both directions.  These conditions allow absorption into the subsurface during and after a rain event and assist evaporation between wet periods.

Hybrid Geotectiles

Weed block fabrics are hybrid woven / non-woven fabric that allows for water, air, and nutrients to pass through while creating a strong stabilizing barrier. These are optimal in weed control applications.

Woven Monofilament Geotextiles

This product is used for specific applications when a strong combination of high strength and strong filtration are needed. While typical woven geotextiles apply highly impermeable slit tape construction, woven monofilaments are made of individual filaments that are woven together in a screen-like fashion.

These products feature various opening sizes to work with the soil characteristics to combine high strength with strong flow characteristics. Due to these unique features, woven monofilaments are usually specified for placement beneath articulated concrete mat systems. They are also quite often specified beneath the surface of high-flow drainage channels where high strength and strong drainage are both extremely important.

Spun-Bound Geotextiles

Spun-bound geotextiles are used when high strength, durability, and permeability are very important. During manufacturing, the product is spun, rolled, and heated to create a very tough but permeable product. Spun-bound geotextiles are usually specified where high strength and long product life are essential. Spun-bound geotextiles are used in landscaping and recreational applications, septic system construction, and subsurface drainage.
