What is driveway underlayment? Driveway underlayment is the geotextile fabric layer installed under the aggregate base of a driveway, between the native subgrade and the gravel or stone base. It acts as a separation layer and driveway barrier, preventing aggregate from migrating into the soft subgrade below. For most residential driveways, Standard Grade woven geotextile is the right underlayment.

The term driveway underlayment is used by homeowners and contractors who think of the fabric layer much like underlayment in flooring — a foundation layer that goes in first and makes everything on top of it perform better. The analogy is apt: just as foam underlayment under laminate flooring dampens impact and protects the floor, geotextile driveway underlayment protects the aggregate base and the driveway surface above it.

Think of your driveway structure as a sandwich:

What Driveway Underlayment Does

  1. Separation: Physically separates the aggregate base from the subgrade, preventing the two from mixing under traffic loads. Without this separation, aggregate progressively disappears into the soil — the most common cause of driveway failure.
  2. Load distribution: The high-tensile fabric distributes vehicle wheel loads laterally across a wider area of subgrade, reducing peak stress at any single point. This is why a geotextile driveway barrier reduces ruts and soft spots even on weak subgrade.
  3. Water passage: The woven geotextile allows water to drain through to the subgrade while maintaining the separation layer. Unlike an impermeable liner, the fabric does not create a perched water table above the subgrade.

The result: a driveway that maintains its structural depth, resists rutting, drains properly, and requires far less ongoing maintenance than a driveway without underlayment.
