Rip Rap Along Lake Side
There are a number of products on the market to protect, stabilize, and prevent erosion in high-concentrated areas of flow.
Riprap is rock or other material used to protect, stabilize, and shield soil surfaces against erosion in areas of concentrated flow. It's typically placed over geotextile along graded ditches, channels, and shoreline banks. It's also used with a combination of rock sizes to construct retention berms for sediment traps and temporarily constructed dams (referred to as check dams) to protect high-velocity culvert inlets.
Riprap is used to stabilize areas on construction sites with high erosive capabilities by increasing the surface roughness and slowing down the velocity of runoff. Appropriate areas on sites may include inlets and outlets of storm pipes and culverts, bridges, slope drains, storm drains, and other areas where the concentration of runoff might prevalent. Riprap is effective for protecting and stabilizing slopes, channels, shorelines, and stream banks.
Fabric Used Under Large Rocks
In some cases, riprap might be a better choice than other other Geo-Fabric erosion control methods. Even though riprap is not considered visually pleasing, it can be one of the most effective ways to prevent erosion and is beneficial in areas where conditions will prevent established vegetation caused by high velocities that vegetation can not withstand. In comparison to other erosion control methods, riprap is easy to install and maintain. The downside, riprap is more expensive to install due to equipment and handling costs and will not offer some benefits offered by vegetation practices.
Geotextile Fabric Used for Rip Rap Application
Riprap is a great choice in areas where erosion outweighs the capability of stabilization of erosion control practices including vegetative control and mulching. As mentioned earlier, riprap is useful for shielding channels and ditch banks, lake shorelines, and for sediment trap berms and high-velocity check dams. But, if you take a closer look, it's more expensive than vegetated solutions using turf reinforcement mating or other similar products. Also, it's more difficult to remove after installations. Therefore, contractors should ensure that the post-construction site is designed specifically for riprap before using it during construction. Keep in mind, riprap can be unstable on very steep slopes.
For slopes that are steeper than 2:1, look into other materials instead of riprap for erosion protection including turf reinforcement matter over seed, open-cell concrete mats, or other slope protection geogrid products.
In general, rip rap is an excellent product to prevent erosion in many areas suffering from high-velocity flow.
