Woven Vs Non-Woven Geotextile Landscape Fabrics

Woven Geotextile fabric is very strong and finely spun strips of linen, polypropylene, or polyester material. This fabric is fairly impermeable meaning fluids have a difficult time penetrating and flowing through the fabric. Woven geotextile fabric's durability and warp resistance are perfect beneath high-load capacity surfaces such as gravel or rock footpaths, highways, and parking lots.

About Non-Woven Fabric

Non-woven is either needle-punched or poly-spun allowing water to easily flow through and both of these products are very sturdy and versatile for excellent landscaping drainage. Non-woven geotextile fabric is used to support good drainage, filtration, and ground stabilization.

It's available as lightweight, medium-weight, and heavy-weight. When handled these fabrics feel like felt. Here is a breakdown of the 3 weights:

Lightweight (2 oz to 3 oz)

This fabric offers high flow rates, substrate cushioning, and drain field applications. The 3 oz is often used behind retaining walls to serve as a barrier between dirt and gravel.

Medium-weight (4 oz to 6 oz)

This fabric allows water to penetrate without disturbing existing soils. It helps in controlling soil erosion, separation, and drainage behaviors such as French Drains. Also, this fabric is used beneath gravel paths and works as a separation barrier between the gravel and the dirt below.

Heavy-weight (8 oz to 16 oz)

This non-woven fabric is great for various applications that require strength and permeability. It's resistant to puncturing and its durability makes this an excellent choice beneath large rip-rap, geomembrane cushioning (when applied to retention barriers), and for artificial lakes.

Note - the upper end of the weight scale, 10 oz will cause the water flow rate to drop significantly due to the thickness of the material.

Heavy non-woven fabrics are used as a separation layer for sand under volleyball courts (8 oz) and to prevent the mixing of ballast and soil under railroad tracks (16 oz)
