Our Floating Row Cover is a 2.5 ounce spunbound geotextile fabric that is used to protect plants and trees from frost. The N-Sulate fabric is formulated to allow water and air to flow through and also has built in UV inhibitors to resist breakdown when exposed to sunlight. All seams are sewn, not glued, for a higher quality performance.

The Frost Protection Fabric helps to lengthen the flowering and harvest time by keeping the air underneath the blanket higher than the ambient temperature. This product is available in multiple roll sizes and is stocked in MO.

How To Increase Your Growing Season & Keep Pests Away

If you have gardens, you should take advantage of Floating Row Covers to increase your growing season while making sure pests stay away! These covers are so easy to handle because they are lightweight, easy to store when not in use, and very inexpensive. Instead of spending your time erecting hoops to protect your plants, use garden fabric draped over your plants and then fasten them securely in place with minimal effort on your part.

Here are some great ideas for using floating row covers, choosing the right fabric, and how to avoid needless mistakes.

What Are Floating Row Covers?

These covers are made of garden fabric which is a thin, white material used to protect plants from various problems including frost. This material is made from polypropylene or polyester, It will not absorb moisture but will allow the infiltration of sunlight and rain. It can be used for a long time depending on how often it's been used.

Is A Floating Row Cover Important?

Protecting Your Warm Season Plants:
Gardeners with warm-season crops only wish the season was longer. Floating Row Covers will provide more time to grow crops. When choosing the right fabric to protect your plants from frost, select a heavyweight fabric designed to trap heat. Gardeners that choose the heavyweight floating row covers experienced temperatures 4 to 10° F warmer during cold, freezing weather.

If used only for a short period of time, loosely place the fabric over the plants and secure it around the perimeter with soil or rocks.

You will have the opportunity to place your warmer-temperature plants outside for a longer time during the season. These plants include tomatoes, hot peppers, and bell peppers. Peppers need warmer temperatures to flourish so consider this garden fabric.

If your plants will be covered for a longer period of time, you need to build a support structure to allow airflow, sunlight, and plenty of room for the plants to grow. Using an unsupported fabric accompanied by active winds can damage the plants.

Protect Cool Season Plants From Heat:

Using Winter Row covers will prolong the harvest of cool-weather plants, like kale, by providing relief from the hot sun. If you have greens like lettuce or spinach, you need to protect them from an occasional warm spell. Choose a lightweight cover to give your plants good air circulation while blocking out a lot of sunlight. This fabric is perfect as the weather heats up in early spring or toward the end of summer heading into fall when you are starting your fall crops. If you live in an area that is very hot or cold, the garden fabric will let you grow edibles that you normally could not.

Take Note - if you live in an area that is very hot or cold, the garden fabric will let you grow edibles that you would not normally be able to grow. If you use heavyweight row covers through the winter to grow vegetables like cabbage or kale, this fabric should work well if you live in milder climates.

Keep Pests Away

If you experience insects, deer, or rabbits eating your plants, a lightweight floating cover is a good choice. When selecting the fabric, make sure it's designed for this purpose, not for something else. If you plan to keep the covers on throughout the entire season, make sure you do not choose a heavyweight fabric meant for trapping heat. Certain crops such as bush beans, leafy vegetables, self-pollinating edibles, and root vegetables do really well with this fabric from the time of seed to harvest. To protect your plants from pests, be sure to secure the fabric down using staples or soil.

Have Less Transplant Shock

Seedlings grown inside cannot usually handle the conditions outside immediately. As seedlings are hardened off, you can slowly introduce them to the outdoors before transplanting them in your garden. If you do not want to harden off your plants outside for several days, you should look into placing your plants under a lightweight row cover. It will cut back on weather conditions allowing your plants to be established.

Regularly Check Your Plants

If you have decided to use row covers for a good amount of time, there are some things you need to take care of. If you have gone through insect problems in the past, you need to find out where they might take up space. Look into crop rotation which is important if using row covers for protecting against insects. You do not want to trap pests that have emerged from the soil and landed in your edibles. If you notice any damage caused by insects while the plants were covered, you need to check it out quickly!

If you have plants that need insect pollinators, you have to open tunnels or hand pollinate. The biggest challenge when using garden fabric, you cannot see what's going on in your garden unless you seriously investigate. Regularly inspecting to assess moisture levels, temperatures, circulation, and the growth of weeds, it will save you from heartaches later on.

If the surrounding environment of the row cover is too humid or hot, open up the ends to get the air circulating. Weeds will thrive in protected environments, so weed regularly. The upside of weeding, it gives you the opportunity to check out your garden beds on a regular basis. Keep in mind, if you want to increase the level of frost protection by 2°F to 4°F, place down 2 layers of the fabric but not more because it will block off too much sunlight needed by the plants.
