Fabric Installation

  • Prepare area by removing all weeds and plants from the desired area. For increased protection consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide prior to laying down the weed barrier fabric.

  • Unroll and cut the weed barrier fabric to the appropriate length. If overlapping the fabric, allow for a 4" - 6" overlap. Cut an "X" slit in the location where each plant will be placed. Secure the fabric with fabric staples, staggering the staples at an approximate rate of 1 staple per 5 feet.

  • Cover the fabric with 3-4 inches of bark, mulch or stone to protect the fabric from ultraviolet light and to give the project a finished look.

The Different Types Of Weed Liners

Any gardener knows weeds are difficult to deal with and they reap havoc on gardens and the surrounding areas. They eat up all the soil's nutrients while overriding other plants, and drain the area of needed water. Once in place, weeds will bury their roots into the soil and start breeding their offspring. Gardeners have chosen to use weed barriers versus harmful chemicals that harm the environment. Barriers will block sunlight, oxygen, and water from getting to the weeds. These barriers will kill off weeds or at least stunt their growth.

Natural Materials

For many years, gardeners have relied on natural materials placing them next to cultivated plants and serving as weed barriers. Some materials including mulch, peat moss, straw, thick layers of leaves, and other organic materials will block weeds from developing roots in the ground among the cultivated plants. These barriers are biodegradable and usually require restoration on a yearly basis. Some of these materials include mulch and straw which house weed seeds making the weed problem even worse. Heavy layers of these materials will prevent needed water and oxygen from getting into the soil that surrounds the cultivated plants. In turn, this can stunt the growth of plants and ruin the soil. Many gardeners will use an easy fix using natural materials as a temporary solution, as a weed barrier, and can be tilled into the soil at the end of the growing season.

Homemade Protection

Homemade barriers include newspapers, sheets of cardboard, plastic garbage bags, and other household products. With the exception of plastic, these materials will allow water to filter through and decompose into the soil. They are quite effective against weeds but are not exactly attractive, they are messy. A strong enough wind will carry many of these products away such as newspapers or plastic unless they are covered with topsoil or mulch.

These homemade barriers can be easily torn under foot traffic unlike natural barriers unless they are thick. Homemade barriers are relatively inexpensive and are economical for recycling paper products and other discarded materials.

Plastics

Heavy-duty plastic of 30 mil thickness or greater will create a solid weed covering forming a long-lasting weed barrier that is very effective. Spread over weeds, the plastic blocks sunlight, water, and oxygen which suffocates mature weeds. The black color will absorb sunlight that by nature warms the soil and promotes good root growth for surrounding cultivated plants. This material reduces soil moisture from evaporating and resists tearing better than other materials but plastic barriers are more expensive than other materials and are not permeable. This can cause issues with drainage and puddling.

There are several different kinds of weed barriers to choose from, and finding what will work best for your gardening needs is important. The time you spend on your gardening needs should not be spent constantly fighting off weeds. What we have listed are some good ideas to help your cultivated plants flourish and grow while keeping weeds down.

Fabrics

Most weed barrier fabrics are sold in rolls at local garden centers. They are constructed of synthetic geotextile material and laminated with a thin layer of black polyethylene material landscape fabric which is more effective than herbicides. The dark color of the fabric will prevent sunlight from reaching weeds. The mesh lets water and oxygen enter the soil.

Many gardeners will cover the entire bed with a fabric weed barrier and then cut slits into the material to help cultivate plants. Even though this kind of weed barrier is very effective, it's also very expensive. Also, after a few years, the material will soften and may create tears from foot traffic and penetrating weeds.
