The heavy-duty landscape liner is uniquely constructed of a blend of non-woven and woven geotextile fabric. This ground cover is a perfect choice for demanding weed control situations. Since this is a mix of both stabilization and filter fabric, the landscape liner provides the strength of a woven fabric with the water drainage of a nonwoven.

This hybrid fabric is also great for commercial applications or large plantings as the woven side provides planting markers that allow for accurate plant spacing. Two grades are available, with slightly varying degrees of durability and permeability.

Offered in multiple widths to accommodate your application.  The heavy-duty hybrid fabric is the premier weed control fabric.

Geotextile Fabric can be woven or non-woven

Non-Woven and Woven Landscape Fabric

Landscape fabric comes in rolled sheets and will give you excellent barrier protection against weeds while offering a great look for your borders and shrubs. Landscape fabric is available in different materials and thicknesses for your garden.

Landscape Fabric - Non-Woven

Non-woven landscape fabric is made from polyester or polypropylene providing a long-lasting solution for weed control. This fabric is an excellent choice for preventing weeds from growing over walkways, and gravel paths, or for desert landscaping. When this fabric is used under a gravel path, it will prevent gravel from getting into the soil.

Landscape Fabric - Woven

Woven landscape fabric is made from linen or polypropylene and has tiny holes in the fabric to allow nutrients and water to get into the soil. This is an ideal fabric for garden beds, trees, and shrubs. Make sure you till the soil before  before placing the fabric.  If you don't, at some point you will have to remove the fabric to till and that's just a waste of your time. Once you have covered the area you want, you have to create large enough holes for plants to grow in the soil.  Water will easily pass through to the soil and then naturally evaporate to guarantee you will have a healthy garden.

Thicknesses

The manufacturers offer different thicknesses for each of the different materials. The thicker the material is, the longer it will hold up but it will cost more. Your garden will determine the thickness of the material required. In other words, if the fabric is underlying heavy rocks, the material will have to be thicker than the material used in herbal gardens.  Although the material is designed to keep weeds out, weeds can still get through a very thin material or if the material becomes damaged or torn. No matter what application you need, the fabric should be covered with organic or inorganic mulch to prevent ultraviolet damage unless the fabric is rated for direct UV exposure.

The downside to organic mulch, new weeds will germinate and you will spend more time pulling weeds that have sprouted through the mulch. Another negative side, would be not covering the fabric and letting it become exposed to the elements as this will shorten the life of the fabric. Ultraviolet radiation caused by the sun will decrease the life of the fabric. Some manufacturers offer fabrics with UV protection so the fabric will not break down over time.

Installing A Weed Barrier Cloth

Weed barrier cloth, also known as landscape fabric, is one of the best tools for any gardener to fight off weeds. Knowing how to install landscape fabric will make everything simpler.  Whether you are creating garden beds, walkways, or patios, this will make your work a great deal easier. This is a mesh-like material that is available in rolls and is very easy to cut to the exact size you need. You must install the material the right way for the best results in battling weeds.

Offer A Nicer Look For Your Landscape

Before placing down your weed barrier, you should clear up the area first.  Remove weeds that are within the area of planting. You have to dig up the weed all the way to its roots to prevent it from coming back. Remove all stones, rocks, sticks, and any other debris. These materials can tear up the material or poke holes in it. The weed barrier must be placed perfectly flat against the ground. Then rake over the area to loosen the soil and smooth it out. If the area has deep ruts, use soil to fill in the ruts completely. Keep in mind, the fabric must lay flat against the soil.

How To Place The Weed Barrier Fabric

To be effective, the weed barrier must completely cover the soil. The edges of the fabric should extend beyond the area just slightly. After you have secured the material you can trim off any excess material.

Overlap the weed barrier fabric where another piece of fabric meets by approximately 6-inches. Overlapping will prevent weeds from trying to grow between the joints. When laying down the fabric on curves, such as a pathway, cut a few slits along the edges of the material to help the fabric bend. Smooth it out as you make contact with the ground.

Once you have the fabric in place, cover it with mulch, gravel, or pavers. When one of these items is placed over the barrier, it will prevent the material from moving. You should check the material from time to time as the fabric can still shift.  Keep in mind, if the material shifts, it can leave gaps that will allow the growth of weeds.  Your best option is to use landscape pins or staples to hold the fabric securely in place before covering it with mulch or gravel. If you are creating edging for the landscape, the pins can be used to secure the edges as well as the fabric.

Note: Using a frost protection cover will raise the temperature under it to help protect plants from colder temperatures.

Cut Holes In The Fabric

If you will be using landscape fabric in your garden bed, you have to cut holes in the fabric to help your plants. If this is a new bed, lay down the fabric first and then cut large enough holes for your plants to fit in. If you already have plants in your garden bed, you will have to cut areas of the fabric to fit snugly around your plants. Overlapping the pieces will help keep weeds from growing and popping up.

In Conclusion

Hopefully, this article has given you great advice and some great ideas for the fabric you should use for your project. Non-woven is perfect for walkways, gravel paths, desert landscaping, or patios. Plant beds need a permeable weed barrier fabric to allow nutrients and water to seep into your plants' root system so they will experience healthy growth.
