Using Commercial Landscape Fabric

As of late, due to the rocketing cost of buying food, more and more people have started their own gardens. The one thing they are never ready for is fighting off weeds and pests. Pests can literally destroy your crops and rain can wipe out your landscaping before your very eyes.

You do have several options such as spending all day pulling up weeds, cutting them back every 2 weeks or so, using toxic chemicals, or you could decide to lay down commercial landscape fabric.

About Landscape Fabric

Landscape fabric is often referred to as weed fabric. It's a material that acts as a barrier between the sun and soil. This fabric is usually made from woven fibers while some are manufactured as one solid sheet of fiber. These sheets have holes that allow water to soak through. Some fabrics offer UV protection to help increase the life of the fabric.

These fabrics are bought in rolls widths and come in approximate lengths ranging from 50 feet to 450 feet. The cost will depend on the thickness, brand and exact fabric composition.

How To Use Landscaping Fabric

Because this fabric is a barrier it will stop weeds and grass from growing while preventing pests and insects from getting to your plants.  To begin with, lay the material over the soil and then place a few inches of much over the fabric. You can also place pebbles, gravel, or sand on top if you prefer a certain look. The thicker the landscape fabric is, the better it will withstand heavier rocks or even bricks.

Different Types Of Commercial Landscaping Fabrics

If there is a landscape design you want to use, incorporating landscape fabric will give you a better end result. With that in mind, you must choose the right material for your project so it will last a long time in the elements. If you want your yard or a specific area to look fantastic, choose from one of these landscape fabrics.

Woven

Woven is a very common choice among professionals and gardeners. These fabrics are usually composed of polypropylene fibers. The fibers are woven together to make a semi-permeable, durable fabric.

Woven fabrics have small holes for nutrients and water to seep in which is essential for your plants. Woven landscape fabric will prevent weeds from growing and is an excellent weed deterrent around trees and shrubs. Feel free to use it in flower beds as long as the plants are not being changed out on a regular basis.

The fabric is typically available in a black color. Some brands offer UV resistance while others are treated for UV stabilization.  Having this option will allow the fabric to hold up for a longer period of time under the heat from the sun.

Non-Woven

This is a commercial fabric that is perfect for landscaping designs using rocks and gravel. This kind of geotextile separation fabric is made from polypropylene or polyester. This is an excellent choice for rock beds or gravel paths.

Non-woven fabrics are more stable and are sturdy enough to stop stones from sinking down into the soil. Many landscapers choose professional-grade fabrics to put underneath stone pavers. It's also a chosen fabric for holding up under large landscaping elements.

Perforated

This is a great choice for a simple front yard look. Perforated landscape fabric is lightweight and designed with pre-cut holes where you would place your plants.

The fabric is extremely light so it will not kill your plant's roots.  The fabric is ideal in areas of a garden where plants have an even pattern. It's great for perennials since you can uproot and change the plants out with no issues. Vegetable gardens use perforated landscaping cloths. Do not use it in areas where there might be a lot of foot traffic.

Spunbound

Spunbound fabric is made from several layers of bonded polyester fabrics. This product is very durable and quite difficult to tear.

The fabrics come in a range of thicknesses. The thinner fabrics are more permeable, allowing water and air to pass through but still remain durable and tough. Spunbound landscape fabric is very versatile and can be used as a weed barrier. It also acts as a border against invasive grasses and pests. The thicker fabric is impermeable and is often used in retaining walls. It stops seepage and wards off roots.

Reasons Why You Need Landscaping Fabric

Landscaping fabric will make gardening a lot easier and more enjoyable due to the reduction in weeds. Using a white ground cover fabric will not only act as a weed barrier but also allow air and water to flow through to the soil. Here are good reasons why you should use a fabric in your yard:

It will keep weed seeds from sprouting. Weed seeds need air, water, and light to prosper. Landscape fabric can prevent weeds from growing. Should the seeds germinate under the fabric, they will die off pretty quickly.

You do not need chemicals to control weeds. Many people are concerned about pesticides for a good reason.  Families with children or pets may want to steer clear of pesticides. Having landscape fabric in place will keep you and your family safe.

It will help prevent soil erosion. Semi-permeable landscape fabric will allow some water to get through but it will help to protect the ground surface from rushing water leading to less soil erosion.

Note: We also offer a white plastic roll in multiple roll sizes.
