Installation Guide by Application

The sequences below are a general guide. Depths, slopes, overlaps, and fabric weight on a designed job come from your project drawings and specification.

French Drain Installation

  1. Excavate the trench to the required depth, with fall toward the outlet. Confirm positive drainage with a level before you go further.
  2. Line the trench bottom and sides with non-woven geotextile, leaving excess fabric at the top to fold over later.
  3. Add the gravel base, set the perforated pipe, then fill with clean drainage gravel.
  4. Fold the fabric over the top of the gravel with a generous overlap so the wrap is fully closed, then backfill with soil.
  5. Hold the fabric in position during installation with 6" landscape staples where wind or slope makes it awkward to work.

Dry Well / Seepage Pit Installation

  1. Excavate the pit to the size the design calls for.
  2. Line all sides and the bottom with non-woven geotextile, overlapping generously at the corners.
  3. Fill with clean drainage gravel — no fines, since fines defeat the point of the pit.
  4. Fold the fabric over the top of the gravel to close the wrap.
  5. Cover with topsoil and sod or landscape cover.

Retaining Wall Drainage

  1. Build the wall per the design.
  2. Place the geotextile against the excavated soil face behind the wall, so it separates the native soil from the space the drainage gravel will occupy. The fabric goes between soil and gravel — not against the back of the wall, which would stop water reaching the gravel in the first place.
  3. Place clean drainage gravel behind the wall in lifts, against the wall face and inside the fabric.
  4. Bring the fabric up as the gravel rises, then close it over the top of the drainage layer before backfilling with native soil.
  5. Confirm there is a drainage outlet at the base — weep holes or an outlet pipe — so collected water actually leaves the system.

Yard Drainage Bed

  1. Excavate the bed area to the design depth.
  2. Line the excavation with non-woven geotextile on all sides and the bottom.
  3. Fill with clean drainage gravel.
  4. Fold the fabric over the top of the gravel with a generous overlap, then cover with topsoil or sod.
  5. Direct surface runoff into the bed via a channel, downspout extension, or graded swale.

Filter or Convey? Geotextile vs HDPE Liner

These two products get mixed up because both are described as "lining a ditch," but they do opposite things and are not interchangeable.
