Gravel Depth and Stone Selection
Gravel depth over the fabric matters as much as which grade you pick. Too little gravel lets vehicle loads reach the fabric directly instead of spreading through the aggregate. Choosing the right stone
Stone shape matters more than most people expect. Use crushed, angular stone with sharp edges — roughly one inch, with no more than about 10% dust. Dense grade aggregate (DGA) or crusher run works well, and limestone is a solid choice. Rounded stone is a poor option because the pieces cannot lock into each other, so the surface shifts and sinks underfoot and under tires. On the finished top layer, keep stone no larger than a golf ball.

- Building on soft, spongy ground. Strip off topsoil loaded with leaves, grass, roots, and debris and get down to firm material. Save the topsoil for elsewhere.

Step-by-Step Gravel Driveway Installation with Fabric
- Clear and excavate. Remove debris, rocks, and stumps that could tear the fabric, and take out vegetation and roots. Clear roots for at least 12 inches beyond each driveway edge.
- Level and crown the subgrade. Grade without creating a trench that will hold water, and form a slight crown so water drains to the sides. If an area holds water, run a pipe or drain to move it out.
- Compact the subgrade with a plate compactor in two passes. Soft or wet subgrade should be allowed to dry or be stabilized first.
- Install edging (optional but recommended) to define the edge and limit gravel migration. It can go in before or after the fabric.
- Roll out the fabric flat on the prepared surface, keeping creases and folds out of it. A related application is the gravel base under a shed or outbuilding. A 4 to 6 inch gravel pad improves drainage, reduces frost-related movement, and helps keep the shed floor dry. Because there is no vehicle loading, a non-woven geotextile is appropriate here rather than a woven stabilization grade:
- Excavate 4 to 6 inches
- Install 4 oz or 6 oz non-woven geotextile on compacted subgrade
- Fill with 3/4" crushed stone or pea gravel
