Best Weed Barrier Fabric — Complete Buyer's Guide
Choosing the right weed barrier fabric comes down to one key decision: how long do you want it to last, and what are you putting on top of it? This guide walks through the two grades of weed barrier fabric we carry at Pro Fabric Supply, the real specs behind each one, and which is the right choice for your project.
In This Guide
The Two Grades: Standard vs Heavy-Duty
Pro Fabric Supply carries weed barrier fabric in two grades: Standard Grade and Heavy-Duty Grade. They share the same core purpose — blocking weeds while allowing water, air, and nutrients to reach plant roots — but they differ significantly in construction, strength, and expected service life.
Polyspun Non-Woven
Pure non-woven polypropylene fabric. UV stabilized. Allows water, air, and nutrients through. Available in 2oz and 3oz.
- Good for lighter-duty and shorter-term use
- Softer, more flexible feel
- Good drainage and airflow
Hybrid Woven/Non-Woven
Woven geotextile with needle-punched non-woven fibers for superior strength and permeability. UV stabilized to 70% retention after 2,500 hours. Available in 4oz and 4.75oz.
- Significantly higher tensile, burst, and puncture strength
- Rated UV resistance (ASTM D4355)
- 25+ year service life when buried out of direct sun
- Best for permanent landscape installations
Standard Grade: 2oz and 3oz Polyspun
Standard Grade fabric is a pure non-woven polypropylene (Polyspun) geotextile. It is UV stabilized, resistant to rot, mildew, insects, and rodents, and allows water, air, and nutrients to pass through to plant roots. It is a solid performer for applications where long-term permanence is not the priority.
2oz Polyspun (FAB-PS2)
The lightest option. Best suited to very short-term applications or situations where minimal thickness is needed.
3oz Polyspun (FAB-PS3)
A step up in density and strength. Suitable for temporary garden beds, paths between rows, and situations where the fabric will be replaced within a few seasons.
Heavy-Duty Grade: 4oz and 4.75oz Hybrid
Heavy-Duty Grade fabric uses a fundamentally different construction: a woven polypropylene base with needle-punched non-woven fibers integrated throughout. This hybrid approach delivers the tensile strength of a woven fabric combined with the water permeability and soil filtration benefits of a non-woven. The result is a dramatically stronger fabric that still allows water, air, and nutrients to pass through freely.
Both Heavy-Duty fabrics carry a rated UV resistance of 70% strength retention after 2,500 hours of UV exposure (ASTM D4355). When buried under mulch or gravel out of direct sunlight, service life extends to 25 years or more.
4oz Hybrid (FAB-HYB)
The entry point into Heavy-Duty Grade. Dramatically stronger than any Standard Grade option, with high water flow rate — ideal for applications where drainage is a priority alongside weed suppression.
4.75oz Hybrid (FAB-HYB) — Our Top Recommendation
The heaviest weed barrier fabric in our lineup and our top recommendation for any permanent landscape installation. Higher tensile strength in both directions, higher burst strength, and higher puncture resistance than the 4oz. The most durable weed barrier option we carry.

Which Grade Should You Choose?
| Application | Recommended Grade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent shrub and perennial borders | Heavy-Duty 4.75oz | Highest strength, 25+ year buried service life |
| Under decorative rock or gravel | Heavy-Duty 4oz or 4.75oz | Resists puncture from stone, maintains drainage |
| Under mulched garden beds | Heavy-Duty 4oz or 4.75oz | Handles foot traffic during gardening, long-term weed suppression |
| Vegetable garden paths (seasonal) | Standard 3oz | Will be replaced; lighter weight is adequate |
| Temporary erosion or weed control during construction | Standard 2oz or 3oz | Short-term use only; cost-effective for temporary applications |
| Behind retaining walls | Heavy-Duty 4oz or 4.75oz | Both grades rated for retaining wall applications; Heavy-Duty preferred for permanent walls |
| Under patios and walkways | Heavy-Duty 4.75oz | Handles load, resists puncture from base material, permanent installation |
UV Stabilization & Water Permeability
UV Stabilization
All weed barrier fabrics from Pro Fabric Supply are UV stabilized — meaning UV inhibitors are compounded directly into the polypropylene fiber during manufacturing, not applied as a surface coating. The Heavy-Duty Grade fabrics carry a rated UV resistance specification: 70% strength retention after 2,500 hours of UV exposure, tested to ASTM D4355.
The most important thing you can do to extend the life of any weed barrier is to keep it covered. Mulch, gravel, or rock over the fabric blocks UV exposure almost entirely. Heavy-Duty Grade fabric buried under cover and out of direct sunlight is built for 25+ years of service. Direct, uncovered sun exposure will shorten the life of any landscape fabric regardless of grade.
Water Permeability
Both grades allow water, air, and nutrients to pass through to plant roots. Neither is a moisture barrier. The Standard Grade fabrics have very high air permeability (171 CFM/ft²). The Heavy-Duty fabrics are rated by water flow: the 4oz flows at 15 gpm/ft² and the 4.75oz at 6.5 gpm/ft², both tested to ASTM D4491. In practical terms, both Heavy-Duty options drain freely in normal landscape conditions.

What is the best type of weed barrier fabric?
For most permanent landscape applications, the Heavy-Duty Grade hybrid woven/non-woven geotextile (4oz or 4.75oz) is the best choice. It combines the tensile strength of a woven fabric with the water permeability of a non-woven, and when buried under mulch or gravel out of direct sunlight, it is built for 25+ years of service.
What is the difference between Standard Grade and Heavy-Duty Grade weed barrier?
Standard Grade (2oz and 3oz Polyspun) is a pure non-woven polypropylene fabric suited to lighter-duty and shorter-term applications. Heavy-Duty Grade (4oz and 4.75oz Hybrid) is a woven/non-woven construction with significantly higher tensile strength, burst strength, and puncture resistance, plus a rated UV resistance of 70% retention after 2,500 hours. The Heavy-Duty Grade is the preferred choice for permanent installations.
How long does weed barrier fabric last?
Heavy-Duty Grade weed barrier fabric, when buried under mulch or gravel and protected from direct UV exposure, is built for 25 years or more of service. Standard Grade fabric has a shorter service life suited to temporary or lighter-duty applications. Keeping any weed barrier covered is the single most important factor in extending its life.
Does weed barrier fabric let water through?
Yes. Both Standard Grade and Heavy-Duty Grade weed barrier fabrics allow water, air, and nutrients to pass through to plant roots below. The Heavy-Duty 4oz fabric is rated at 15 gpm/ft² water flow and the 4.75oz at 6.5 gpm/ft², both tested to ASTM D4491. Neither fabric is a moisture barrier.
What oz weed barrier should I buy?
For most permanent landscape beds, shrub borders, and under-mulch or under-gravel applications, the 4.75oz Heavy-Duty Grade is the best choice. For high-drainage-priority applications, the 4oz Heavy-Duty is an excellent option. For budget-conscious or temporary applications, the 3oz Standard Grade is appropriate. The 2oz Standard Grade is best suited to very short-term use only.
Will weed barrier fabric rot underground?
No. All four fabrics are non-biodegradable polypropylene. They will not rot, mildew, or break down from soil contact, moisture, insects, or rodents. This is by design — it is what makes them appropriate for permanent underground landscape installation.
