Our white landscape fabric is a woven ground cover fabric which is ideal in applications where a light reflective fabric is required. This fabric is perfect for preventing weed growth and germination and the white color reflects sunlight onto surrounding plants.

The UV stabilization treatment enables this fabric to outlast other non-treated fabrics that are exposed to the sun and elements.

This fabric also features planting stipes that run down the length of the fabric roll. These stripes are helpful to ensure straight placement of plantings in a commercial growing application.

Weed Barrier Fabric Options

If you have a garden, the last thing you want to see are weeds popping up everywhere.  You will spend an entire day doing nothing but pulling up weeds when there are so many other things you'd rather be doing. If you install a weed barrier, you will prevent your garden from turning into an unsightly mess.

Installing a weed barrier, also known as landscape fabric, is a garden fabric made of woven or nonwoven polypropylene.  The most popular fabric is the woven fabric made of a mesh texture to prevent weeds from infiltrating your garden but still allowing water, oxygen, and fertilizer to enter.

The best weed barriers will save you time pulling up weeds from your flower and vegetable gardens. These barriers are effective, dependable, and durable, giving you excellent protection.

How To Choose The Best Weed Barrier

For quite some time now, weed barriers have been one of the most popular alternatives for preventing weeds without using dangerous chemicals. They are cost-effective for keeping weeds away and will help to improve the look of your garden. If you have a vegetable garden, you might get a better yield because your plants will be using the soil and nutrients, not the weeds. When shopping for a great weed barrier, consider the material used for the barrier including its durability, size, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly.

The Material

Nonwoven Weed Barriers

These barriers are permeable and are an excellent choice in areas where the application requires a fabric that drains well and provides some weed protection. The felt like material allows for easy water flow helping to reduce water pooling. These fabrics must be buried away from UV light to retain their long term structural integrity.

Woven Weed Barriers

Woven barriers are created with woven fabric or other materials forming a mesh-like weave.  Woven barriers will block sunlight from helping weeds grow. Perforated weed barriers are similar to woven barriers but instead of weave, they have small pinprick holes allowing water and air to enter. Polypropylene and burlap are the most common materials used for woven barriers.

Lifespan & Durability

A good quality weed barrier should last anywhere from 5 to 20 years or possibly longer. The best weed barriers are manufactured to endure normal wear and tear and extreme weather conditions. The fabrics are designed not break down underfoot, after a rainy season, or exposure to direct sunlight. Please note that long term exposure to sunlight will eventually wear down the fabric even if it has been manufactured with UV inhibitors.

Weed barriers are available in a variety of materials and thicknesses. Both of these factors contribute to their durability and longevity. The thicker and more durable the material, the longer your barrier should last. Woven materials such as woven polypropylene, burlap, and linen will break down faster than thick nonwoven polypropylene which can withstand for decades.

When choosing a barrier for your project, consider the thickness of the material. A thick barrier is a durable choice for a gravel pathway but the same barrier may be too thick for a vegetable or flower garden.  For a vegetable or flower garden, you need a thinner, more permeable weed barrier, even if the barrier is not as durable.

Choosing The Right Roll Size

In general, weed barriers come in rolls that are very easy to transport and use. The weed barrier roll should show the fabric size so you can determine how much ground a roll will cover. Be sure to account for roughly an 8-inch overlap for areas that will need several pieces of fabric.

Weed barrier rolls are usually 3 to 17.5 feet wide and range from 50 to 432 feet long.

When comparing similar barrier sizes, a thicker, heavier roll will not only be thicker but will last longer. For most home products, a professional-grade product will cost more but will offer more benefits such as a more durable material or better UV resistance.

Eco-Friendly Options

Standard weed barriers you can purchase at the store are materials made from polypropylene and polyester which are not exactly eco-friendly. Barriers made from natural fibers such as burlap or linen are more eco-friendly but will break down much faster than plastics.

When choosing the right material, choose a durable material so you can use the barrier for a longer period of time and then dispose of it in a safe, environmentally conscious manner. By doing so, you will reduce your ecological footprint.

The Eco-Friendly Alternative

If being eco-friendly is important to you, consider using a natural barrier such as mulch, straw, peat moss, or other organic material. Keep in mind, natural barriers will take a great deal more work but because the materials are biodegradable, this is, without a doubt, the most environmentally friendly alternative.

UV Resistant

UV light is the destructor of outdoor fabric and will eventually cause exposed weed barriers to degrade. There are several ways to help weed barriers resist UV damage.

Many professional-grade fabrics have built in UV inhibitors. If you want to improve UV durability, consider covering the weed barrier with mulch, gravel, rocks, or other organic materials.

Covering the barrier will decrease its exposure to UV rays and help any fabric last substantially longer.
